My Teaching Philosophy
As an educator I desire to instill a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I believe our role as teachers is to teach beyond the basic curriculum. Lesson planning involves not only understanding the content, but also creating opportunities for each and every student to make significant and relevant connections to the content. In my classroom, students are treated as individual learners with unique needs. Diverse experiences, learning styles, and abilities are recognized and respected as students develop the confidence to shine.
Every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies not only in abilities, but also in learning styles. As a teacher, my role is to give children the tools with which to enhance their own knowledge. To accomplish this goal, I teach to the needs of each child so that all learners can feel capable and successful. I present curriculum in a way that tailors to the interests of the children and makes learning important to life. I incorporate themes, integrated units, projects, group work, individual work, and hands-on learning in order to make children active learners. Finally, I tie learning into the world community through service learning to help children become caring and active members of society.
My classroom management techniques are centered upon instilling discipline in my students to minimize the amount of instructional time spent on behavioral issues. I create a fun and structured learning environment to keep students on task, and teach them how to make good decisions by reinforcing established consequences. As a leader and a role model, I set an example for my students by always treating them with dignity and respect. Ultimately it is my privilege and responsibility to prepare students for the world by helping them to become accountable and conscientious citizens.
In my classroom I create an environment where the learning process is valued and celebrated by all, allowing students to feel secure taking risks. I strive to build this community of learners within the classroom while always remembering that learning does not occur in an isolated environment. Understanding a child’s home environment and community resources is critical to developing complementary curriculums. I maximize my students’ learning experiences by taking the time to regularly initiate positive and constructive collaboration between home and school.
Each and every student’s success is a direct reflection of my own success as a teacher. Just as I evaluate them, I must always be willing to evaluate myself. An effective educator stays abreast of best practices in the field of education, but also realizes that being at the forefront of research and technology is not enough. To create the best possible learning environment for my students, I will combine knowledge of new theories and approaches, with reflective practice and ongoing assessment of my learners’ needs. Teaching is an evolving practice and my students will always have things to teach me. Because of this, I will be a different teacher tomorrow than I am today.
